We are Nick and Pip. We have lived afloat since 1990, initially on our first boat Duet and now on Rusty. We decided Duet was too small in 1992, and in 1993 the building Rusty project began.
We bought Rusty as an empty, part-built hull, then completed her ourselves - with enormous amounts of help from friends and acquaintances. She is a 13m junk rigged steel yacht. She isn't finished yet, however we are living aboard, having moved on in 2006.
Neither of us were boat builders at the start of this project, but we have learnt a great deal. We are Mathematicians There are 3 kinds of Mathematicians, those that can add up, and those that cannot! by education, Computer Consultants Consultant: A person who thinks he knows how to talk to a computer. A person who really knows how to talk to a computer is known as a fruitcake and Teachers If you can read this, thank a teacher. by profession, and boatwrights She just needs to take up a bit, sir. by necessity!
We are currently in The Netherlands, exploring the canals, trying to do fitting out jobs as we go along.
This site is mostly about Rusty and our travels on her. Also about building her, what we learnt from it, how we would do it differently, and advice for other brave souls who make the same decision.
Because she was a major part of our life for so long, Duet also has a place on this site. In fact a lot of our theories about boat layout come from living aboard her.
Just so that you get an idea of our priorities, a large part of this site is about our travels, the places we've visited, the meals that we've eaten and the friends that we have made.
Because we are computer nerds, we have experimented a bit with this site and it needs javascript enabled, for some parts java installed and enabled and for some parts shockwave installed and enabled. We believe it works reasonably in Firefox, Internet Explore and Netscape. Personally we recommend Firefox.
Last but not least, every Christmas we make a crossword puzzle that we send to our friends and relatives. These puzzles (with solutions) are now available here.
