Bangalore - Shopping

Herbs, spices, silk, pashminas . . . beautiful saris, but when would one wear them?

There are particular shopping areas - MG Road, Commercial Road and Brigade Road, running into Garuda Mall, is the most expensive.

Lots of tourist shops and beggars.

Cunningham Road has Sigma Mall, a supermarket, coffee shops and a specialist tea restaurant. Also a couple of the government shops, which sell pashminas and crafts for a reasonable price. They give the taxi driver a cut, so one tends to end up there, whatever you've asked for.

Unity Building (J. C. Road) is quieter and more compact.

Bangalore - Tipu Sultan's Palace

Another summer palace, this time from the brief Muslim rule, and wood rather than stone. The pillars are teak trees, soaked in water for a year to soften them enough for carving.

The palace was neglected for a century, so most of the painted decorations have gone, and what's left is damaged.

Next door, a very impressive temple.

The team's only day off.

Roelof took a day trip to the Tajh Mahal. See his photos at glamournet.net

For the rest of us, a taxi ride around town to see a few sights.

Then shopping for the others, while we joined a long queue ...

.. for a train ride in the park.

A meal with everyone at the Samarkand restaurant.

And finally Vidhana Soudha by night.

The summer palace for the Maharaja of Mysore. Inspired by Windsor Castle, it is decorated mostly with plaster plaques, hand painted walls and bits of dead animal.

But some nice courtyards . . .

. . . and the very glitzy Durbar Hall.
